Beerus (ビルス, Birusu) is an instrumental god in the 7th Universe, he is the Hakaishin of his respective universe. Beerus' role in his respective universe is to maintain the balance of the universe by destroying planets, in contrast to its Kaiōshin who preserves them.[3] Beerus' mortality is connected with the Kaiōshin of the 7th Universe, Shin. He is also the twin brother of the 6th Universe's Hakaishin, Champa.

Background[]

As the Hakaishin Beerus has been tasked with destroying planets in order to maintain a robust balance within the 7th Universe, where he is instructed to upkeep the order between creation and destruction alongside his Kaiōshin.[3] Throughout the millennium, a significant amount of beings in the universe started gaining knowledge about Beerus and his role in the universe. This often led to the beings treating him to a feast, hoping to stay on his good side to avoid having their planet destroyed.[4] He sleeps for several years to several decades and destroys planets when he is awake.[3] The Z Sword a blade either created or obtained by Beerus, who at one point as a result of a disagreement with the Kaiōshin, during a meeting between the two that is said to occur every one-thousand years was said to be the event that resulted in the sealing of the Elder Kaiōshin within the Z Sword, as destroying the Kaiōshin Realm would've been improper.[3]

Elder Kaiōshin described this event and Beerus without mention of the sealer's name. But noted that Beerus was a villainous individual who was almost as terrible as Boo. The sealing was said to be the result of him being afraid of his abilities.[5][6]

At some undisclosed time on both his own and his twin-brother's birthday, both he and Champa fought against each other. The altercation occurred after Beerus devoured the Puff-Puff Fruit on their birthday cake. The two came to blows and during their bout they destroyed various planets that resulted in both Hakaishin pitted the universe in danger. The two were embroiled in such a battle that both Champa and Beerus used their ultimate attacks against each other. Before being chopped on the back of their necks in order to neutralize them. Whis then suggested what eventually became to be the tradition of the two powerful deities exchanging their competitive nature in food contests, where both gods find specific foods in their respective universe.[7]

Other events that occurred at some point of history was when Beerus went to the Kaiō of the North's planet, that was much larger at the time. There he and the Kaiō played a car-racing video game, in which he lost. Peeved that he was defeated, Beerus destroyed most of the planet.[3] Where in the anime adaptation it was said to have occurred over a game of hide-and-seek.[8]

At some point, he also met Freeza. The two in their introduction got along very well at first since they both enjoyed destruction. However, in modesty, they were polar opposites. Freeza was openly arrogant, constantly boasting himself, whereas Beerus was more humble and simply enjoyed destroying things and fighting strong opponents.[citation needed]

Beerus lost an arm wrestling match to a superior (Quitela in the manga, Belmod in the anime) Hakaishin from an unknown universe (in the manga its Universe 4, while in the anime its Universe 11) at an unknown point in time.[9]

DBZ Movie 14 - Battle of Gods 31 Vegeta

Beerus' visit on the planet Vegeta.

At some point, Beerus and his attendant Whis were treated to a feast by King Vegeta on his planet in his palace. While eating, Beerus used King Vegeta's head as a stepping stone. King Vegeta succeeded in getting Beerus to not destroy planet Vegeta. But this only delayed its destruction as he asked Freeza to destroy it for him.

Thirty-nine years prior to Age 778, the Oracle Fish prophesied to Beerus that he would battle a mighty opponent, the Super Saiyan God. Afterwards, Beerus went into a deep slumber, deciding to wake up after thirty-nine years had passed.

Personality[]

DBSuper - Beerus on Planet

Beerus feasting on a distant planet.

Beerus is usually very playful (like most cats). He can be easily angered over the most trivial of things, such as being denied pudding. Beerus is known for being mercurial, destroying even important planets. Although he does have certain lines he does not cross. One example is he didn't destroy the Kaiōshin Realm during a heated argument with Elder Kaiōshin, instead he simply sealed him into the Z Sword. Even if he wanted to, it wasn't likely Whis would allow him to do so in the first place.

Despite being a Hakaishin, Beerus is well mannered and polite to others as well as respectful, shown when he apologized to Bulma for smacking her and ruining her festivities. Beerus can also be sociable when in a good mood. Beerus is a gourmet, as his temple is stocked with fish and other food and he thoroughly enjoyed the delicacies of Earth's food. He is also quite comically childish at times. Despite his polite overtone, Beerus does show pride in his position as a Hakaishin, and will strike anyone who insults his work.[10]

Beerus is also highly manipulative. Despite initially getting along with Freeza as both liked to destroy things, he did not like Freeza in the end and used Freeza to destroy planet Vegeta for him since that planet was too far from where he lived. Once Freeza completed his task, Beerus had planned to kill him the next time they met. He also asked an unknown dinosaur-like being to destroy earth at some point in the past, which never happened.

Beerus is shown to be a health freak as he does not like greasy food. It could be his dislike only applies to greasy food as he does enjoy other unhealthy foods like sundaes. He also seems to enjoy watching anime. He had no problems playing video games with the Z-fighters.

Beerus is also known for keeping promises. However, if he changes his mind, he will still uphold the promise to a minimal degree. For example, when he promised Gokū if he lost their fight, he would destroy the earth, he simply destroyed a small piece of rock which is considered to be earth. If Beerus finds an opponent to have potential with a decent personality, he will challenge them to a fight and if he's outclassing them, he will hold back to train them.

Even though he's a Hakaishin, he doesn't rule his universe with an iron fist. Instead, he visits planets he wants to destroy. He generally enjoys a feast to see if the planet is worth being left alone. He also uses inhabitants as objects, although he doesn't go as far as to dehumanize them. He also has a sense of mercy in him as he spares planets that have treated him to a fine meal that he enjoys. If he finds so much as one thing he doesn't like, the best one can hope for is half their planet being destroyed. Despite willingness to fight anyone that he deems a bother, he isn't without morals, as he sought to discipline the people at Bulma's party when they were laughing when a gun was pointed to Trunks' head, apparently unaware such a weapon is useless against Saiyans. While at the same time, if Beerus finds a food he likes he will interrupt training sessions of others to question about the food. When Goku complained about that, he threatened to destroy Earth if Goku had a problem as he claims Earth's food is the only reason he hasn't destroyed it yet.

Beerus has shown to be quite fond of Earth as even though he claimed he had no further business with Earth regarding Zamasu in front of the Dragon Team, he secrety travelled to meet with Gowasu to figure out how he can destroy the Zamasus of the future to protect the Earth of the future even though the present Earth would not be affected by the future Earth's fate.

He and his twin brother Champa have a ritual every time they meet to share foods they discover from their respective universe to see which is more delicious, further demonstrating their love for food. Because their universes were identical, Beerus laughed at Champa when they discovered his Earth nearly had humanity driven to extinction, thus making Champa unable to access the delicious foods Beerus does. Yet he seems to have some care for his brother, as he wished for Universe 6 to have a Earth of its own. He remained quiet when his brother was erased, silently grieving in private for some time.

Beerus is also a highly dedicated martial arts fighter and student. This was shown when he was stated by Elder Kaiōshin to not be anywhere near as dreadful as Majin Boo when he sealed him into the Z Sword. After countless eons of hard work and dedication, he become much stronger than the tyrant being able to destroy him with ease, evidenced by the fact he defeated Goku in Super Saiyan 3.

He does show some form of respect for Gokū and Vegeta, as he told Whis to keep quiet that Beerus originally authorized Freeza to destroy Planet Vegeta even though Vegeta didn't have enough power to pose a threat to Beerus. When Goku was seemingly vaporized by his own spirit bomb, he clenched his fists and wondered if it truly was the end for his rival. He even calmly smiled, when it was revealed Goku survived. He also displays fear and reverence for those above his station, as he addresses the Zen'ō with the honorific "-sama".[11]

Likewise despite him being very calm, collected, and rational when not enraged. He is quick to panic, argue, and act rash when dealing with problems above his station. A prominent example is when he learned about Zenos decision to erase the defeated universes in the Tournament of Power. He complained loudly about this, and only shut up when Grand Priest told him to be quiet. Later he even asked Whis to bribe his own father in order to cancel the tournament, stopping only when Whis reminded him of how ridiculous that sounded. Ironically while Beerus was panicking about the mere idea of the tournament, Champa was very nonchalant about the idea of it, even confident of his teams victory.

Beerus is also quite wise despite his brash personality because he displays restraint when killing special individuals such as a kaiōshin in training. He was also quick to realize killing a kaiōshin would not be appropriate, so he threatened to beat Gowasu senseless if he picked another pupil like Zamazu.

Beerus also seems to have a reputation for leaving no survivors when challenged, which is evidenced by Gowasu wondering how Gokū was still alive having fought Beerus.

Appearance[]

Beerus full

Beerus.

Beerus' appearance is that of a purple, feline with a humanoid build. Perched atop his head are large pointed ears, which give him a good sense of hearing, the left of which has a gold piercing. He also has a long, whiplike tail. The Hakaishin has a thin build that belies his surprising strength; his rawboned physique is enhanced by a slight but present muscle build. Beerus' standard attire is Egyptian themed, consisting of a thick golden collar, and a black cloth around his shoulders, lined in white and striped with blue, and a orange diamond in the center. His pants are blue gi, with a darker blue obi and a black sash covering his front, with two white diamonds and another orange diamond, lined in gold. He wears simple brown shoes, and has golden wristbands and armbands, as well as two golden anklets.

Beerus' sleeping clothes consist of a simple white cloth worn over his body.

Abilities[]

BeerusAura

Beerus channeling his ki.

As the Hakaishin of the 7th Universe, Beerus is one of the most powerful deities in the universe, only surpassed by his guide, Whis. Without much effort, he's shown himself capable of easily defeating the likes of the Dragon Team a collection Earth's strongest fighters, who've saved their home world, but have saved the universe from the brink of destruction from foes such as Majin Boo. Beerus was able easily overpower them all, and even flawlessly defeat the likes of Majin Boo, Vegeta and Gokū. Each of the respective universe's strongest warriors single-handly in martial arts, where he possessed the ability of defeating warriors with simple strikes and pokes, and can make weapons out of the most unorthodox tools, such as chopsticks.[3]

Even among the Gods of the universe, Beerus has shown to be immensely impressive where he was able to single-handely overpower various Hakaishin in combat.[12]

The gods of the universe fear Beerus, both for his temperamental attitude and his strength. As the Hakaishin he possesses the capability of destroying organisms that in normal cases is only used on the whim of Beerus in order to upkeep the balance within his respective universe, however this ability can also be used in other universes such as 10th Universe, where uses it against Zamasu; a prodigy among the Shinling race, who was destroyed from existence. This ability also is potentially related to Beerus' unique ability to reduce objects to dust within his palm.[3] Similarly Beerus also possesses the ability to shave the entire half of a planet with a single touch. Beerus is even able to fight against other Hakaishin such as his twin-brother, Champa. Who both fought on par with each other. When comparing the strength of himself and his twin brother, Champa, Vados subtly implied Beerus was stronger than Champa, due to Champa's physique. Beerus himself seemed only amused at the idea that his brother wanted to challenge him, fully confident in his own strength.[13] Beerus has also shown being immune to poison as he ate and drank poisoned food and beverages which didn't affect him at all. He also has the ability to detect poison, having called out the inhabitants of the planet he visited on trying to poison him.[14] Like Freeza's species, he can also survive in the vacuum of space, which allows him to freely traverse the cosmos without the aid of a spaceship or spacesuit. Even Super Saiyan Blue Gokū and Vegeta are still weaker than Beerus[15], and Beerus proved capable of easily handling Vegeta as a Completed Super Saiyan Blue.[16] Despite all of his strength, Beerus states that the other universes have spawned fighters stronger than Gokū or himself, one of which was later revealed to be Jiren.[3][17]

Power and Physical Prowess[]

Beerus has immense strength, as a god he possessed the ability to easily overpower warriors who've augmented their own bodies through the use of Ki. Notably, the sheer strength of his clash with the Super Saiyan God Gokū was enough to begin the destabilization of the Universe; within only a few strikes, the destruction of the Universe would have been assured.[18] In his early battles while holding back he was able to smash Super Saiyan 3 Gokū down onto the ground with just a flick to his forehead. Beerus with him immense strength was able to use a single chop to the neck to defeat Gokū, rendering one of the strongest warriors in the universe unconscious and simultaneously revert him back to his base form. Beerus also has incredible speed, able to effortlessly dodge Super Saiyan 3 Gokū's attacks. His endurance is also immense, as an enraged Vegeta's attacks did not injure him at all. His speed is also trillions of times faster than the speed of light, able to go from his planet to another one in another star system in the span of less than two minutes, making him able to cross interstellar space without Whis' help.[19] Elder Kaiōshin stated that Beerus destroyed 8 and 1/2 planets within half a day after waking up from slumber.[20] Physically, Beerus is capable of destroying planets with simple kicks and punches.[3] It was also stated by Elder Kaiōshin that Beerus fighting at 100% power would equate to the destruction of the entire universe, which was demonstrated by the impact of his and Super Saiyan God Son Gokū's punch, which sent shockwaves all over the universe.[21][22] While talking to Yogengyo in the anime, Whis stated that comparing Beerus' power to Gokū and Vegeta's was like comparing the height of Beerus' Palace to the height of a tree.[23] Before he and Vegeta underwent training to obtain godly ki, Gokū was skeptical he would beat Beerus even if he fused with Vegeta.

Life Usage[]

KikohaSuper

Beerus charging a Kikōha.

Beerus is able to create Kikōha so large that it can destroy planets, though one as big as a golf-ball was more than enough to destroy a planet.[19] He was able to momentarily defeat one of the universe's strongest foes with a single Kikōha, a being that is nearly invincible.[24] Beerus' Kikōha. have either appeared in form of yellow or purple color. A single flex of Beerus' ki was enough to badly injure Piccolo, Tenshinhan, and No. 18 when they fought against him.[25] Beerus has also shown the ability to nullify energy, something which was stated to be impossible. Beerus himself says this requires "100%" of his power to perform.[26]

Destruction[]

Beerus destroys Zamasu

Beerus obliterates Zamasu.

He is also capable of destroying planet with a sneeze in the form of ki.[27] He could also destroy planets without using a ki blast, just tapping it with his claw could either blow a planet in half.[28] Whis stated that Beerus once destroyed the Sun, and thus Whis had to rewind time to restore it as was very dark without the Sun.[29] Beerus also has the ability to detect a person's killing intent at a level far superior to any Kaiōshin and even Gokū's, having the ability to detect Zamasu's killing intent when no one else present, apart from Whis, was able to sense it.[30]

Ultra Instinct[]

UltraInstinctBeerus

Beerus using Ultra Instinct.

Beerus, due to his training with Whis, has the ability to use Ultra Instinct. By Whis' own assessment, Beerus has yet to master the skill.[31] Beerus himself has displayed the skill in the manga, while fighting in the Zen Exhibition Match. He used it to dodge attacks from the various Hakaishin simultaneously; due the fact that he hasn't mastered it, however, he wound up being caught by Mule.[32] Unlike the Ultra Instinct that would later be displayed by Gokū, Beerus is able to use it without a transformation.

Beerus awakes from his long slumber. The Alarm Bombs go off but he, still does not awaken. After Whis teases him, it has little effect. After Whis threatens him with his bad singing, Beerus awakens. While eating breakfast, Beerus is informed of the major changes in the ecosystem in the universe, such as the planet Vegeta that was destroyed by Freeza, noting that he originally ordered Freeza to destroy the planet on his behalf, due to it being so far away. Beerus becomes shocked when he hears Freeza was defeated. Beerus is shown a projection of the illustrious battle between the Saiyan Gokū and Freeza. After Whis explains about the legend of the Super Saiyans, explaining the changes it makes to the Saiyan race. Beerus recalls having a dream about fighting the Super Saiyan Gods, to which the Yogengyo said it probably did. Beerus decides to track god the Saiyan who defeated Freeza, Gokū. After meeting Gokū, Beerus questions him about the Super Saiyan God. Gokū doesn't have any knowledge about it but demonstrates to Beerus the transformations a Saiyan can achieve. After transforming into Super Saiyan 3, Gokū requests to challenge him, to which Beerus allows. Both Beerus and Gokū fight, but Beerus effortlessly defeats the powerful Super Saiyan 3 Gokū, knocking him unconscious. Disappointed at the lack of challenge, Beerus departs with Whis to Earth to see if Prince Vegeta and the other Saiyans know anything about the Super Saiyan God, bidding North Kaiō farewell.

Beerus MajinBu Custard

Beerus asks Mr. Boo for one or two of the custard puddings.

Beerus and Whis arrive at Capsule Corporation, where Bulma's birthday party is being held. Beerus meets with Vegeta, asking about the Super Saiyan God but he also shows no knowledge about it. Beerus notes that a festivity of sorts is happening. Vegeta, knowing about what Beerus is capable of from his childhood, welcomes him to Bulma's party wanting to put him in a good mood. Beerus enjoys the party and the delicious food. After been hit by a stray bullet due to Gohan, Beerus becomes angry and prepares to destroy the Earth. Seeing this, Vegeta casts aside his pride and starts dancing to put Hakaishin in a good mood. Beerus' anger subsides. Beerus continues to enjoy the food. Wanting to try Earth's pudding, Beerus politely asks Majin Boo for one or two custard puddings he has. However, Majin Boo eats all the custard puddings.

Beerus DefeatsBuu&Gohan

Beerus easily defeats Gohan and Majin Boo.

Furious, Beerus blasts Majin Boo into a lake. The other members of the Dragon Team take action and attempt to fight Beerus; Beerus defeats 18, Tenshinhan and Piccolo with some chopsticks. Beerus goes to retrieve Majin Boo but Gohan interferes. Beerus slams Gohan's head into Boo's, defeating them. He is approached by Gotenks and defeats him as well. Beerus fights Vegeta and defeats him as well. Before Beerus tries to destroy Vegeta, Bulma walks up and scolds Beerus for ruining her birthday party, slapping him. The Hakaishin returns the favor right back and responds with a slap of his own, only his is much harder. Seeing his wife beaten, Vegeta explodes in a fit of rage and strikes Beerus, knocking him back. Vegeta's anger gives him incredible power and manages to punch Beerus several times, even landing a Ki Manipulation Wave against the Hakaishin. After Vegeta's rage ends, Beerus is shown to be uninjured by Vegeta's rampage and knocks Vegeta out with a Forehead Poke. Beerus decides to destroy Earth, but Gokū's timely arrival and his claim that he knows how to summon the Super Saiyan God intrigues Beerus, causing him to stop his action.

GodVsGod

God versus god clash in battle.

Gokū uses the Dragon Balls and summons Shenron to find out information about the Super Saiyan God. Shenron sees Beerus and greets him nervously, but Beerus requests that Shenron explain to him about the Super Saiyan God, to which Shenron quickly complies. After learning about the nature of the Super Saiyan God, the other Saiyans and Videl (using the energy of Pan that is inside Videl) transfer their Ki to Gokū, allowing him to ascend into a Super Saiyan God.

GokubattlesagainstBeerus

Beerus utilizes his trump card against Son Gokū.

Happy that he can finally challenge a Super Saiyan God, Beerus and Gokū battle. Beerus battles evenly with the powered up Gokū, satisfied with the sufficient challenge Gokū is giving him now. Although Gokū is able to damage the Hakaishin a few times, Beerus still has the upper hand. Their battle intensifies, both of them fighting each other fiercely blow for blow in the sky (even though Gokū is fighting only as a Super Saiyan) and eventually their battle takes them into Earth's orbit. After Beerus is hit by Gokū's Kamehameha, Beerus counters by launching a large sun-like energy sphere at Gokū to which Gokū can barely resist. Beerus explains that Gokū has contained the Super Saiyan God power within his body, allowing him to use its power even without the transformation and that is why he was still able to fight him despite being only a Super Saiyan. After absorbing Beerus' energy sphere by briefly transforming into a Super Saiyan God, Gokū admits defeat and surrenders, unable to truly beat the mighty Hakaishin.

FinalGokuBeerus

Gokū accepts defeat against Beerus.

Beerus stops the battle and acknowledges that Gokū is the second strongest opponent he has ever faced. He tells Gokū that his attendant Whis is his martial arts master and is stronger than him. Beerus also tells Gokū that there are twelve universes; theirs being the Seventh Universe and each universe has a Hakaishin. Beerus takes the battered and tired Gokū back to Earth. Obligated to fulfill his promise, Beerus decides to spare the planet by destroying a small amount of earth (rocks) due to having taken a liking to Gokū, admitting that his fight with Gokū drained him of his power. Beerus apologizes to Bulma for interrupting her birthday party. Before leaving, Beerus promises to battle Gokū again next time. He and Whis leave Earth and travel home.

GoodnightBeerus

Whis defeats Beerus with a single chop.

At his temple, Beerus notes that the Oracle Fish's prophesy was a bit exaggerated and tells Whis that Gokū and Vegeta will become formidable foes before long. While they are eating sushi, Beerus tries some of the wasabi, but the wasabi makes Beerus to go berserk, causing him to destroy some of the moons around his temple. Whis intervenes, stopping Beerus' rampage with a karate-chop to his neck. Whis then orders Beerus to sleep for 3 more years.

Dragon Ball Z: Revival of "F" (Film)[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Revival of "F" Beerus is sleeping on his planet, but is disturbed by Gokū and Vegeta training with Whis, and demands to know how the Saiyans arrived on his planet. After finding out that Whis brought them there, the Hakaishin speculates that his attendant only agreed to do so with the reward of food, which Gokū confirms. Beerus becomes wary of Gokū and surmises that the Saiyan is building his strength in order to take his job as Hakaishin, which Gokū denies.

After being ticked off by Whis' assertion that the combination of Gokū and Vegeta would match him in power, Beerus asks what food did the Saiyans bring to bribe Whis, and Whis responds that it was pizza, which the Hakaishin is eager to try out. After recalling Whis' previous statement, Beerus also deduces that Gokū and Vegeta were repeatedly training on his planet while he was sleeping, much to his consternation.

Later on, while enjoying his pizza, Beerus interrupts the Saiyans' training session with Whis, much to Gokū's displeasure. However, Beerus informs Gokū to watch his tone, or otherwise face the destruction of Earth, causing Gokū to retract his statement and immediately apologize. Afterwards, both Beerus and Whis take interest in Bulma's offering of a strawberry sundae after the Oracle Fish informs Whis he missed that call from Bulma earlier.

Later, while the Dragon Team is watching Gokū and Freeza's battle heat up, Beerus and Whis appear with the intention of eating the strawberry sundae that Bulma offered. Bulma is initially hesitant to give the two the ice cream, but frantically does so when Beerus threatens to blow up the Earth. Beerus and Whis end up enjoying the ice cream and proceed to analyze the battle waging on with Gokū and Freeza.

Freeza then notices Beerus and nervously asks why the Hakaishin is there, and Beerus responds he's simply enjoying his ice cream treat. A fearful Freeza asks the Hakaishin if he intends to interfere with his plans of revenge, which Beerus denies and tells Freeza to do as he pleases, much to Bulma's dismay. However, Beerus reassures Bulma that her life will be spared if she continues to give the Hakaishin delicious treats, causing the rest of the Dragon Team to comically stay close to Beerus for protection against Freeza.

Whis and Beerus end up arguing after the Hakaishin becomes takes most of the strawberries on the sundae, to which Beerus reminds his attendant that he is a God. Later, Beerus is among those who are dismayed at Gokū letting his guard down against Freeza and being struck through the chest by one of his henchmen.

After Freeza manages to destroy the Earth due to taking advantage of Vegeta taking too long to finish the tyrant off, Beerus requests Whis to shield them from the planet's destruction. Beerus speculates that Freeza is still alive and chastises Gokū for being too soft to properly finish off Freeza.

After Whis turns back time and gives Gokū a second chance to kill Freeza, Beerus is disturbed at the prospect of condoning the restoration of a planet, but Bulma reassures that he and Whis will be rewarded with a large banquet.

Vegeta's anger gives him incredible power and manages to punch Beerus several times, even landing a ki Blast against the Hakaishin. After Vegeta's rage ends, Beerus is shown to be uninjured by Vegeta's rampage and knocks Vegeta out with a Pressure Point Attack to his head.

Just as he is about to destroy Earth, Beerus has a sudden idea. He decides to give the Earthlings another chance at saving Earth. Thinking he is the same species as Majin Boo because of his pink hue, Beerus picks Oolong out of the crowd and challenges him to a game of Jan Ken to decide the fate of Earth. Oolong manages to draw twice, but Beerus eventually wins. Beerus decides to destroy Earth, but Gokū's timely arrival and his claim that he knows how to summon the Super Saiyan God intrigues Beerus, causing him to stop his action.

Happy that he can finally challenge a Super Saiyan God, Beerus and Gokū battle. Beerus battles evenly with the powered up Gokū, satisfied with the sufficient challenge Gokū is giving him now. Beerus launches a medium sized energy sphere, but Gokū is able to reduce its size and implode it with his hands. Gokū realizes that Beerus isn't fighting at his full strength, causing Beerus to retaliate by blasting Gokū in several directions and then smashes Gokū into an island. On the island, Beerus punches Gokū several times; Gokū counters by headbutting Beerus. Their battle intensifies, both of them fighting each other fiercely blow for blow in the sky and eventually their battle takes them into Earth's orbit. In Earth's orbit, Beerus throws a small energy sphere at Gokū which Gokū blocks. Beerus then creates hundreds of small energy spheres and fires them; Gokū uses his Kamehameha to destroy all the small energy spheres. Suddenly, Beerus impales Gokū, saying that Gokū is not the person he is looking for nor the Saiyan foretold in the prophesy. However, Gokū regenerates and flies back into orbit to confront Beerus. Beerus is surprised and impressed with how far Gokū has come. Beerus decides to award Gokū's efforts by showing Gokū his full power.[34]

Beerus disappears and tries to chop Gokū's neck, but Gokū catches Beerus' hand, saying that the same trick won't work twice, to which Beerus agrees. Gokū and Beerus power up and start to utilize their true power. Gokū and Beerus clash; the impact of their punches sends huge shockwaves throughout the universe. Gokū and Beerus clash again, causing more shockwaves to reverberate throughout the universe, destroying some planets in the process.

Gokū and Beerus clash again for a third time. Although, this time Gokū manages to match Beerus' punch with his own, cancelling out the attack. Beerus is impressed with Gokū's progression and commends him for making it this far; Gokū thanks Beerus because of him he has been able to reach a new level of power. Gokū and Beerus clash again, with Gokū managing to keep up with Beerus and is able to land a punch against the Hakaishin.

Beerus throws an Atomic Sphere at Gokū while Gokū counters with a Kamehameha. The struggle between the Atomic Sphere and Kamehameha sends shockwaves throughout the universe again. The Atomic Sphere begins overpowering Gokū's Kamehameha. Gokū notes that he has reached his limit. Suddenly, Gokū's Kamehameha begins pushing back Beerus' Atomic Sphere; Gokū feels that his Super Saiyan God powers keep increasing and realizes that he hasn't reached the limit after all. Beerus and Gokū push their attacks at one another; the struggle between the Atomic Sphere and Kamehameha causes a huge explosion which completely covers Earth's skies.[35]

Gokū's Kamehameha and Beerus' Atomic Sphere merge together and become an ultra high density ki sphere. Gokū and Beerus push the ultra high density ki sphere at each other, with both sides struggling to gain the momentum against each other. However, the Earth is not destroyed. Whis is surprised that Beerus decided to take that course of action.

Beerus tells Gokū that he nullified the ultra high density ki sphere and turned it to nothing; Gokū says that is impossible but Beerus explains that he can by using 100% of his power, much to Gokū's astonishment, shocked that he still had that much power. Beerus explains that he didn't want to use his full power against a mere Saiyan. However, because the circumstances are different now, Beerus decided that he doesn't want to lose against Gokū. Gokū and Beerus fight at 100% power, hitting each other blow for blow. Beerus prepares to fire a ki blast at Gokū's chest, but Gokū grabs Beerus and head butts him repeatedly which allows Gokū to break free of Beerus' grasp. Gokū and Beerus clash again. However, Beerus sees that Gokū's Super Saiyan God form's time limit has nearly reached its end; Beerus commends Gokū for making him use so much power even though he is a mere Saiyan. Gokū's Super Saiyan God form runs out and he returns to being a Super Saiyan.

Gokū continues fighting Beerus even though he doesn't realize that he is no longer a Super Saiyan God, struggling to hit Beerus. Surprisingly, Gokū lands a punch against Beerus, much to the Hakaishin's shock and another hit is delivered successfully . Beerus informs Gokū about him losing his Super Saiyan God powers which surprises Gokū, although Gokū feels that he has not lost any power. Beerus explains that Gokū has contained the Super Saiyan God power within his body, allowing him to use its godly power even without the transformation. Gokū and Beerus clash again with Gokū managing to hold his own even though he is just a Super Saiyan. While they are fighting, Gokū and Beerus laugh because they are having a great time.[36]

Beerus and Gokū continue their fierce battle, with Gokū being able to hold his own against the mighty Hakaishin. Both Beerus and Gokū hit each other blow for blow eventually taking their battle into Earth's ocean. In the ocean, Gokū manages to deliver a powerful punch against Beerus, but the Hakaishin retaliates with many hits. Beerus takes Gokū above the ocean and kicks him away; Gokū gets up and fires a Kamehameha against Beerus. However, Beerus nullifies and voids out Gokū's Kamehameha, reminding the Saiyan that he has the ability to do so. Beerus goes on the offensive, forcing Gokū to defend himself. Suddenly, Gokū is surrounded by many Beerus' that fire Atomic Spheres at Gokū which hit him. Beerus thinks that he has won, but is surprised that Gokū survived the blasts; Gokū goes on the offensive and throws a punch at Beerus who blocks the punch. Gokū launches himself and Beerus into Earth's atmosphere, much to the Hakaishin's surprise.

In Earth's atmosphere, Gokū's Super Saiyan transformation wears off and Gokū returns to normal, battered and tired. Beerus commends Gokū for making the Super Saiyan God's power his own and for making him use almost all of his power. Beerus tells Gokū to keep what he said between them a secret; that he regretted having sought after Gokū. Gokū tries to chuckle, but is infuriated that he could not defeat Beerus. Beerus appears before Gokū and prepares to flick Gokū on the head with his finger, deciding that their battle should end how it began. Beerus flicks his finger against Gokū, causing the injured and tired Gokū to fall down to Earth.

While falling, Gokū remembers that Beerus will destroy the Earth along with his loved ones if he should lose. Gokū musters all his remaining energy, transforms into a Super Saiyan and flies back towards Beerus. Beerus is shocked at Gokū's tenacity but welcomes it. Gokū launches a Kamehameha at Beerus; the Hakaishin fires an Atomic Sphere at Gokū. The two attacks merge into a sun like energy sphere similar to before. Beerus decides to use the sun like energy sphere as his trump card to defeat Gokū and destroy Earth. Gokū struggles to stop the massive energy sphere, returning to normal in the process. Goku, with all his might, disperses the sun-like energy sphere. Before falling unconscious, Gokū tells Beerus that his status as a god does not allow him to decide the limits of a person. Gokū becomes unconscious and falls towards the Earth.

Gokū falls towards the cruise ship and Vegeta catches him. As Gokū thanks Vegeta, Beerus appears on the cruise ship with the Dragon Team ready to fight him. Whis commends Beerus and requests that he return home and recuperate, in an attempt to sway the Hakaishin from destroying the Earth. Beerus intends to keep good on his promise and aims to destroy the planet as a result of winning his fight against Gokū by charging up a ki blast, but misses the Earth entirely due to suddenly falling asleep. Whis informs a flabbergasted Dragon Team that the Hakaishin is tired, and explains that while Beerus won't wake up in a good mood, he'll likely forget about the destruction of Earth. Whis also informs the Dragon Team to make sure they have pudding the next time he and Beerus arrive, to which Bulma assures, but demands that the Earth will not be destroyed if Beerus does not like the pudding. Whis responds that Beerus will be quite angry if he does not like it regardless, which annoys Bulma. Before Whis departs with Beerus, the former says he'll reward Gokū for giving Beerus a good time. On the way home, Whis tells Beerus wake up from his "sleep", but Beerus reassures his attendant that he actually was sleeping. Whis and Beerus discuss that Earth has the ability to change people, and Whis speculates that Beerus saying he'd show Gokū his 100% of his power was a lie in order to draw out the Saiyan's full power, which Beerus confirms.[37]

Revival of "F" Arc (Anime)[]

Main article: Revival of "F" Arc Six months after his battle with Gokū, Beerus is sleeping on his planet. After Whis brings Gokū to the planet to receive training, Vegeta takes Gokū to Beerus' bedroom. Vegeta gives Gokū an apron to wear like him and explains that their job is to change Beerus' sheets and blanket. However, the simple job proves to be a challenge as Beerus' sleeping antics (such as randomly hitting anything in his bed's vicinity) and not wanting to disturb a grumpy Hakaishin prevents the Saiyan duo from accomplishing the job. Eventually, the sleeping Beerus grabs Gokū's leg in an arm lock; Vegeta tells Gokū to levitate himself, which gives Vegeta the opportunity to change Beerus' sheets and blankets. After successfully changing the sheets and blankets, Vegeta manages to make Beerus levitate down to his bed and let Gokū go with dried sardine, to which the Hakaishin takes the bait and eats the dried sardine. With Beerus sleeping on his clean sheets and blanket, Vegeta declares the job to be done.

During their training later that day, Gokū and Vegeta are teleported by Whis to Beerus' bedroom. The sleep talking Beerus attacks the Saiyan duo in a grumpy rage and blasts them with an Atomic Sphere from his mouth, then falls back into his deep slumber. Gokū and Vegeta survive Beerus' Atomic Sphere, which pleases Whis and decides to end their training for today. The next day, Whis mentions that even Beerus has not perfected the technique that requires every part of the body to think independently.[38]

During Gokū and Vegeta's training, Beerus arrives after having trouble falling fast asleep. Beerus wonders how the Saiyans are on his planet, to which Goku tells the Hakaishin that Whis brought them here. Beerus speculates that his attendant only agreed to do so with the reward of food, which Gokū and Vegeta confirm. Beerus becomes wary and surmises that the Saiyans are building their strength in order to take his job as Hakaishin, which Gokū and Vegeta deny, the latter not wanting the former to surpass him. Beerus asks his attendant for the delicious food, but Whis regretfully informs the Hakaishin that he accidentally dropped the food this time while traveling back to the planet. Suddenly, Beerus realizes that Whis has repeatedly gone to Earth many times while he was asleep. Whis is silent at first but decides to be truthful, telling Beerus that he went to Earth to be his food taster.[39]

Four months after Freeza's revival, Beerus watches the Saiyan duo training while relaxing from his chair and notes that the Saiyan duo have become stronger, although Goku admits that his power is still greater than theirs. Suddenly, Beerus has an idea and order Whis to send the Saiyan duo to that place. However, Whis doubts that Goku and Vegeta are ready for it, but Beerus reasons that it is the best way to get stronger fast and as an added bonus, it won't be noisy on his planet anymore. Whis carries out the order and uses his scepter to teleport Goku and Vegeta to that place. Seeing that its quiet again, Beerus asks Whis if the snacks are ready, to which Whis notes that he will prepare them.[40]

Beerus is enjoying eating his pizza. Whis asks Beerus again if sending the Saiyan duo to that place was the best choice, to which the Hakaishin has no problem with as it is the best way to get stronger fast so that they can play with him. Whis is watching Gokū and Vegeta train; Beerus has finished eating the last box of pizza and orders Whis to provide him with more pizza. However, Whis informs Beerus that he has stored many pizza boxes in his staff but since he ordered Gokū and Vegeta to be sent there, them staff is currently in use. Beerus demands more pizza, forcing Whis to stop Gokū and Vegeta's training, transporting the Saiyan duo along with his staff back to Beerus' Planet. Whis heals Gokū and Vegeta. Afterwards, Whis gives Beerus his pizza, but the boxes are all empty, courtesy of the Saiyan duo. Beerus is furious that the Saiyan duo ate his pizza and chases after Gokū and Vegeta.

Meanwhile, Whis looks at an incoming message which is from Bulma regarding the ice cream sundae. Whis contacts Bulma; Bulma asks Whis to tell Gokū and Vegeta to return to Earth immediately and informs him about Freeza's revival. Whis informs Gokū and Vegeta about the situation; Gokū decides to have Whis transport him and Vegeta to Earth, but Whis says that it will take 35 minutes to reach Earth. Beerus reminds Gokū that he can use Instantaneous Movement; Gokū tries it, but is unable to lock onto any ki on Earth due to it being so far away. Suddenly, Gokū locks on to Gohan's ki signature; Vegeta grabs Gokū's shoulder and they teleport from Beerus' Planet to Earth.

During the ki struggle between the transformed Gokū and Freeza, Whis contacts Bulma about the ice cream sundae and informs her that they will be at Earth within less than four minutes. Suddenly, Whis stops traveling to Earth after sensing something and tells Beerus that they have unexpected visitors. The visitors appear in front of Beerus and Whis, revealing themselves to be Champa and Vados. Beerus asks Champa why he is in the Seventh Universe since the Hakaishin of the Sixth Universe has no business in his universe; Champa replies that he is merely visiting and expresses surprise that Beerus is awake. Not believing Champa, Beerus asks the Sixth Universe Hakaishin if he is trying to steal food from the Seventh Universe, but Champa claims that the Sixth Universe's food is superior to the Seventh Universe, expressing no interest in the Seventh Universe's food and states that he is merely checking things out. However, Beerus knows Champa is lying and becomes suspicious. Whis informs Beerus that they have a place to be at while Vados informs Champa that they must go. Beerus and Champa decide to settle things next time.

Beerus and Whis arrive on Earth and the Hakaishin asks Bulma for the ice cream sundae, to which Bulma gives to them. While Gokū and Freeza battle, Beerus and Whis enjoy eating their ice cream sundae. Freeza that Beerus is among the Dragon Team and asks why he is here; the Hakaishin replies that he is here to eat the ice cream sundae and is not concerned with Freeza's revenge, telling the tyrant to do whatever he likes. Watching the battle, Beerus notes that if Vegeta worked together with Gokū, Freeza would have already been defeated; Whis interjects and says that the Saiyans' pride would never allow them to work together. After Gokū is pierced by Sorbet's ray gun, Freeza prepares to kill the Saiyan but Vegeta intervenes and prepares to fight the tyrant himself. Vegeta transforms into the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and overpowers Freeza.

Refusing to accept defeat, Freeza decides to destroy the planet, killing Vegeta in the process. Shortly afterwards, Earth is destroyed, but Whis creates a bubble around a small piece of rock to protect himself and the others. While Bulma despairs, Gokū regrets not killing Freeza when he had the chance. Whis tells him that he has the power to set back time but only three minutes earlier. He does so, and they arrive back right before Freeza destroys the Earth. Gokū transforms into the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form and immediately attacks Freeza with a Kamehameha which destroys and kills the tyrant.

Beerus is disturbed at the prospect of condoning the restoration of a planet, but Bulma reassures that he and Whis will be rewarded with a large banquet. After Piccolo is revived, the Dragon Team along with Beerus and Whis attend a large banquet at Capsule Corporation. Beerus and Whis enjoy the delicious food the banquet has to offer.

Creation and Conception[]

BeerusBasis

Debo, the cat that served as Beerus' model.

Akira Toriyama's inspiration for the design came from an old Cornish Rex cat (named Debo) living with him (like Toriyama's previous cat was the inspiration for Karin). After the cat became seriously ill, the vet declared it did not have much longer to live, but the cat miraculously recovered and the vet joked that it might be some kind of demon.[42] Beerus' physical design also takes some inspiration from Ancient Egyptian deities,[43] notably Seth and Sekhmet. Seth is a humanoid with a jackal-like head who is the god of desert, storms, darkness, and chaos in ancient Egyptian culture. Sekhmet is a humanoid with a lioness head who is the Egyptian Goddess of Destruction, believed to cause diseases. In addition to sharing the same position as Sekhmet, Beerus is a felid like her, as he is an anthropomorphic cat.

Trivia[]

  • The scriptwriter Yūsuke Watanabe originally envisioned as a villainous character who infects people with evil and was the one who gave the Saiyan race their characteristic ruthlessness.[44] Also, Beerus originally looked like a lizard, but Akira Toriyama changed his design entirely.[45]
  • In accordance to the original concept for this character, his name in Japanese, Birusu (ビルス), is a pun on "virus" (ビールス; German pronunciation). In spite of this, series creator Akira Toriyama originally thought the name was a pun on "Beer",[46] characters in relation to Beerus, such as Whis and Champa, would follow this alcoholic naming convention
  • Beerus was supposed to fight the Dragon Team with a spoon or fork, but the Dragon Ball Z: God and God animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro thought it would be difficult for him to fight like that, so he suggested switching it to chopsticks.[45]
  • In terms of sheer power, by word of Akira Toriyama, Super Saiyan God Son Gokū is a 6, Beerus is a 10, and Whis would rank a 15.[47]
  • According to the Dragon Ball Super rival 'danger scale', Beerus places nine stars out of twelve.[48]
  • Beerus' name was originally romanized as "Bills"; this romanization has been kept in the Latin American dub of the series.

Quotes[]

FUNimation Japanese
  • (To Whis) "The seer's prophecy confirms my premonition. An arch-rival of mine will reveal himself soon… and he shall be a Super Saiyan God!"
  • (To Gokū and Vegeta) "Excellent, I shall eat pizza. But if it's not absolutely delicious, I'll destroy you both for interrupting my slumber, do you hear me?"
  • (To Gokū) "If I want to, yes, and I don't recommend you take that sort of tone with a destroyer again. Don't forget, your planet's culinary feats are the only reason it continues to exist, but if you prefer, I can destroy it now and you can practice in peace."
  • (To Freeza) "That's not polite Freeza, you forgot to say 'Lord'."
  • (To Freeza) "Hmph! Now why would I possibly care about that? You're free to do as you please, Freeza. But just do it farther away from my ice cream. I don't want to confuse your combat dust for sprinkles!"
  • (To Freeza) "I just told you to do as you please. I'm a destroyer God. I am not here to take sides."
  • (To Bulma) "Calm down, Bulma, as long as you keep supplying me with fine delicacies like this, I'll make sure that your life is spared at least. You just stay close to me."
  • (To Majin Boo) "As much as I shrug off the cosmic shortcomings of the witless masses, there is one thing I can't tolerate. And that is the callous arrogance of those who do not pay me the respect a Destroyer is due."
  • (To Freeza) "What, Freeza? Did you just drop my title?"[31]
  • (To Freeza) "I am the Hakaishin! I am no one's ally!"[31]
  • (To Majin Boo) "I am quite a friendly god. But there is one thing I do not tolerate. The insensitivity of those who are not respectful."[49]
  • (About Gokū, in his thoughts) "Being strong is such a sad thing... so, to the friend that gave me such a good time... I must deliver a proper goodbye."[50]
  • (To Gokū) "Oh boy... If I continue talking to you, I will be infected with your baka-sickness and turn into a fool! Hahahah, no... Maybe I am already infected."[50]
