"Kinkaku and Ginkaku's Man-Eating Gourd" (金角・銀角の人食いひょうたん, Kinkaku · Ginkaku no Hito Kui Hyōtan; FUNimation "Terror and Plague"; Literally meaning "Golden Horn and Silver Horn's Man-Eating Gourd") is the seventy-ninth episode of the Dragon Ball anime.

Summary

Gokū is traveling when he sees a girl about to be eaten by a tiger-monster. He saves her and she asks him to help her village which is being terrorized by two men called Kinkaku and Ginkaku. When they reach the village, they see that there is a call going on in which when a person's name is called, and if they don't reply "here", they will be sent inside the gourd (a bottle used by Kinkaku and Ginkaku to trap people and dissolve them into a sake). Gokū shows, challenges and beats them, but they use the gourd and trap him. Gokū uses his Nyoibō to prevent himself from completely falling into the bottle. One of the thugs decides to drink the new potion thinking Gokū has been dissolved. Once Gokū is freed, he surprises Kinkaku and Ginkaku and traps them into the gourd. Kinkaku and Ginkaku beg for mercy and as punishment for their tyranny they are put to work.

Trivia

  • While the dub of the episode refers to the liquid inside the gourd as 'water', according to the Japanese, and Daizenshuu 7, the liquid inside is actually sake, an alcoholic drink.
  • Kinkaku and Ginkaku, as well as the Man-Eating Gourd they utilize, are based on characters and an item from the Chinese tale, Journey to the West. In the original story, Kinkaku and Ginkaku are two demon brothers, known as the Great King Kinkaku (金角大王, Kinkaku-daiō) and Great King Ginkaku (銀角大王, Ginkaku-daiō). They used one of the five treasured tools, the Crimson Gourd (紅葫蘆, Benihisago) to suck in their opponents, melting them once they are trapped within.
