Dragon Ball Super: Broly (ドラゴンボール超 ブロリー, Doragon Bōru Sūpā Burorī), known as Dragon Ball Super the Movie: Broly in the English release, is the twentieth overall film of the Dragon Ball series and the first film under the Dragon Ball Super name. Announced on December 15, 2017 in Jump Festa 2018, it was released on December 14, 2018.
Plot[]
This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Gokū spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Gokū and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called "Broly" who they've never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what's this one doing on Earth? This encounter between three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Freeza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix.[1]

The film was noted to be about the origin of the Saiyans, where it features several new Saiyans. This film will also depict the origin of the strength of Gokū and co.'s power. Akira Toriyama will be supervising the script, and draw the character designs for the new film. Toei Animation promises a film "stronger" with a "more interesting story", beyond the previous ones.[2]
It will take place following the Tournament of Power. Toriyama states that he wrote the story himself, with the intention of explaining more about the Saiyans and Freeza, as well as the film showcasing a powerful villain specifically for the film.[3]
According to Dragon Room chief Akio Iyoku, the new movie will have a "multilayered" story with parts set in both the past and present, and multiple settings. Toriyama's provided the story and over 20 sheets of designs, including characters, machines, and at least one new planet.[4]
The film also revealed to be introducing a new iteration of the character Broly, with Akira Toriyama himself stating that he would rearrange the character and update him to fit into the story of Dragon Ball Super, resulting in what he sees as a more fascinating character.[5]

Box Office[]
In its opening weekend between 14 and 16 December 2018, the film was shown on 467 screens in Japan, and surpassed Dragon Ball Z: Revival of "F" to set a new opening weekend record for the franchise.[6] It opened at number-one at Japanese box office by dominating the weekend from December 14 to 16, selling more than 820,000 tickets and earning more than ¥1.05 billion ($9.26 million) in its first three days.[7] In its first six days it sold more than 1 million tickets and earned ¥1.3 billion ($11.6 million).[8] After three weekends, on 31 December it earned $23.6 million in Japan.[9] After 38 days of release, the film's earnings had increased to ¥3.75 billion ($34.23 million) to become the highest-grossing film in the series.[10] As of 3 February 2019, the film has sold 3,009,730 tickets and grossed ¥3,895,569,200 ($35.43 million) in Japan.[11]
Despite limited release In the United States the film earned $7.03 million on its opening day, which was a new series record, besting Revival of 'F'´s $1.97 million.[12] The film ended up grossing $9.8 million across the three-day opening weekend to bring its domestic total up to $22.6 million in six days.[13]

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 83% based on 58 reviews, with an average rating of 7.0/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Dragon Ball Super: Broly may seem like colorful chaos to newcomers, but for longtime fans, it represents this long-running franchise near its action-packed apogee."[14] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 59 out of 100 based on 6 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[15]
The film holds a 7.7/10 on IMDb, based on over 30,000 votes.[16] On MyAnimeList the movie holds a 8.17 based on more than 268,000 votes.[17] On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 92% audience score based on more than 2,500 audience reviews.[14]
