The Super Saiyan Second Grade is a forced increase to the power output of the original Super Saiyan transformation. As it is not a separate transformation, the form itself differs from the true successor to the Super Saiyan form: Super Saiyan 2.
History[]
Among the Dragon Team, this form was first theorized by Gokū when the latter awoke from his coma, induced by the Heart Disease. Vegeta and Trunks were the first to achieve the state, followed by Gokū himself, during their training sessions in the Room of Spirit and Time. Vegeta achieved it before his son, in just two months,[3]dubbing the form "Super Vegeta".[4]
Trunks and Gokū would go on to achieve both this form and its successor, Super Saiyan Third Grade, shortly after acquiring Second Grade.
Appearance[]
The Super Saiyan Second Grade form, as a branch of the original Super Saiyan form, does not differ drastically in the visuals department. Like all forms in the original Super Saiyan line, the Super Saiyan Second Grade is characterized by upright, golden hair, albeit more rigid then the original form, and an increase in the Saiyan's muscle mass. Aside from this, there are no known differences to the appearance of the form.
Attributes[]
The Super Saiyan Second Grade works by concentrating the power of the Saiyan to their nerves, inflating their muscles. The result is a state that is both stronger and faster than the original Super Saiyan transformation.[5] While Vegeta, in his original Super Saiyan form, was outclassed by No. 18, he manages to dominate Cell's Second Form utterly, after the latter had absorbed No. 17.[6] Despite the immense powers granted by the Second Grade form, it was outclassed entirely by Cell once he had obtained his Developed Form.[7] In the anime, the form also proved to be powerless against the Cell Juniors as well.[8] Despite it's power, the form does have its own flaws; specifically, increased energy consumption from transforming and maintaining the transformation. The Super Saiyan Second Grade form would eventually be abandoned when the Dragon Team's Saiyan's unlocked the Super Saiyan 2 form, a vastly more powerful transformation.
There are no known changes to the personality of the Saiyan, as Trunks and Vegeta did not exhibit any changes their original Super Saiyan form would not have given.
Trivia[]
- In the initial sketches, before going to name the transformation "Super Vegeta" (
超 ベジータ, Sūpā Bejīta) for Vegeta's case, it was called "Saiyan Limit" (サイヤ人 リミット, Saiya-jin Rimitto) or "Z Saiyan" (Z サイヤ人 , Zetto Saiya-jin).
