Dragon Ball Super: Broly (ドラゴンボール超 ブロリー, Doragon Bōru Sūpā Burorī), known as Dragon Ball Super the Movie: Broly in the English release, is the twentieth overall film of the Dragon Ball series and the first and only Dragon Ball Super film. Announced on December 15, 2017 in Jump Festa 2018, it is slated for release December 14, 2018.

Plot

This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Gokū spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Gokū and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called "Broly" who they've never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what's this one doing on Earth? This encounter between three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Freeza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix.[1]

Overview

The film was noted to be about the origin of the Saiyans, where it features several new Saiyans. This film will also depict the origin of the strength of Gokū and co.'s power. Akira Toriyama will be supervising the script, and draw the character designs for the new film. Toei Animation promises a film "stronger" with a "more interesting story", beyond the previous ones.[2]

It will take place following the Tournament of Power. Toriyama states that he wrote the story himself, with the intention of explaining more about the Saiyans and Freeza, as well as the film showcasing a powerful villain specifically for the film.[3]

According to Dragon Room chief Akio Iyoku, the new movie will have a "multilayered" story with parts set in both the past and present, and multiple settings. Toriyama's provided the story and over 20 sheets of designs, including characters, machines, and at least one new planet.[4]

The film also revealed to be introducing a new iteration of the character Broly, with Akira Toriyama himself stating that he would rearrange the character and update him to fit into the story of Dragon Ball Super, resulting in what he sees as a more fascinating character.[5]

Trivia

  • This movie marks the final Dragon Ball film to be aired during the Heisei era of Japan's history, airing five months before the roll-over into the Reiwa era.
