Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (ドラゴンボール超 スーパーヒーロー, Doragon Bōru Sūpā Sūpā Hīrō), is the twenty-first overall film of the Dragon Ball series and the second film under the Dragon Ball Super name. Announced on July 23, 2021 in Comic-Con 2021, it was planned to be released on April 22, 2022 before being postponed to June 11, 2022 due to Toei Animation studio hacking.

Plot[]

Goku once destroyed the evil organisation "Red Ribbon Army". However, their dying wish is still alive!! They are revived, with the birth of the new Androids "Gamma 1 & Gamma 2", moving on to their revenge. Quickly sensing the threat, Piccolo would sneak in the Red Ribbon Army's base, and come to know about the existence of the unimaginable "Most Ominous Weaponry"......!! With Pan kidnapped to the base luring even Gohan into joining the fight, an unprecedented battle starts!!!! What will be the location of the expected mortal combat!? And finally, what about the fate of the Earth!?[1]

This time, Akira Toriyama provided the script and character designs of the film. Furthermore, the movie is said to be completely canon.[2], though it would later be supplanted by its retelling in the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Box Office[]

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero topped the Japanese box office on its debut weekend, selling about 498,000 tickets and earning around ¥670 million (about $4.98 million).[3] In its second weekend, the film's gross earned ¥300 million (about $2.2 million), placing it second behind Top Gun: Maverick.[4] After 12 days of release, the film had sold over 1 million tickets.[5] In its third weekend, the film remained in second place, earning about ¥232 million (about $1.71 million) from 166,000 tickets. It had cumulatively sold 1.21 million tickets and earned about ¥1.64 billion (about $12.11 million).[6] Cumulatively, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has earned ¥2.3 billion (about US$17.03 million), surpassing The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie to become the fourth-highest grossing Japanese anime film of 2022.[7]

In the United States and Canada, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was initially projected to gross $13–15 million from 3,130 theaters during its opening weekend.[8] After making $10.74 million on its first day, including $4.3 million from Thursday night previews, estimates were raised to $21–23 million. It went on to debut at $21 million, topping the box office.[9] In its second weekend, the film earned $4.7 million, finishing fifth.[10] Eventually, the film earned $38.1 million, becoming the fourth highest grossing anime film in the United States.[11]

Audience and Critic Reception[]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of 57 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.3/10. The website's consensus reads: "Blending beautifully animated action with fresh character development, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is everything fans of the franchise will be looking for."[12] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 65 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[13]

The film holds a 7.1/10 on IMDb, based on over 13,000 votes.[14] On MyAnimeList the movie holds a 7.56/10 based on more than 51,000 votes.[15] On Rotten Tomatoes, 95% of more than 2,500 audiences' reviews are positive.[12]

Trivia[]

  • This movie marks the first Dragon Ball film to be aired during the Reiwa era of Japan's history, airing more than 3 years after the roll-over from the Heisei era.
  • It is also the first of all the 21 movies to be animated in full CGI.
