This article details a subject that is considered canon.

Time (時間, Jikan) is defined as the continued progression of existence from past to present and finally to future.

Overview[]

In the Dragon Ball franchise, time flow is not simply limited to past, present, or future—rather, it is presented as a multiverse. Each decision generates a new timeline in which events play out completely separately of one another. For instance, in one timeline, a plant could grow into a sprawling forest which is later cut down for a large city. In another, the plant could die, causing the forest to never grow and the city the replaces it to be considerably smaller. In some timelines, the planet even dies.[1] As a result, in some ways, time travel is completely useless as it will only change the events of one timeline. However, it's shown that timeline splitting may affect other universes as the latest Time Rings in 10th Universe was "created" a few years ago thanks to someone traveling to the past.[2]

Time Travel[]

Main article: Time Travel Several characters have learned to manipulate time flow in order to travel to the past or to the future. The most famous example of a time-traveler is the Trunks of the Future. According to Jaco Teirimentenpibosshi and Whis, however, time travel is a severe crime and even the gods are forbidden to do so.[3][1] Whenever there's a time travel, a "distortion" (時空のゆがみ, jikū no yugami; Literally meaning "space-time distortion") appears and a Time Ring was "created" to follow it in space-time to the source.[2]

Typically, a Time Machine is required in order to travel back and forth through time. Such technology is said to be beyond the creative prowess of Earthlings, however Bulma of the future was capable of theorizing and creating the necessary technology all by herself.[1] Tokunoshin Ōmori also hinted that he knew how to create a time machine.[3] The time machine, however, because it's connected to parallel worlds, not the specific one, it only travels to the same future whenever its initial setting is still in place. If the settings change and if the connection isn't be strong enough, it would no longer be able to go to the same future again.[4]

Technology is not always required, however, as Whis was able to reverse time with his staff,[5] and Gokū Black as well as Gowasu and Zamasu simply used the power of their Time Rings.[1][2]

Trivia[]

  • According to Jaco, the punishment for time traveling in the 7th Universe is banishment from the planet where the crime was committed.[6]
  • Despite claiming that the manipulation of time is illegal, even for deities, Whis used his Do-Over ability to rewind time after Golden Freeza destroyed the Earth.[5]
