Ultra Ego is a technique driven by instinct and the indulgence of fighting spirit. Taught by the Hakaishin Beerus that power derived solely from instinct is unbounded,[2] as well as about "power of destruction" (破壊の力, hakai no chikara), Vegeta awakened this technique, making the innate power his own.[3] Regarding receiving damage as fuel and the ideal stimulant, Vegeta considers the technique as being capable of evolving.[4]

Appearance[]

Vegeta's complete Ultra Ego.

Vegeta's complete Ultra Ego.

Ultra Ego bears hallamrks of past transformations; the brow ridge swells, akin to Super Saiyan 3, with the user losing their muscles, as well as gaining an immense amount of muscle-mass. Vegeta's cheek bones become more pronounced, and his hair in this state becomes more wild, edging out near the end and changing from black to a vibrant purple. Vegeta's eyes also become bright purple, and gain pronounced pupils. The aura of this state is purple and flame-like, resembling that of a Hakaishin such as Beerus.[5]

Attributes[]

Ultra Ego is Vegeta's strongest transformation.[6] When transformed in this state, the user gains the ability to use the power of Destruction, to the point that this trait manifests itself in their very aura. The initial transformation comes with its own massive power-up. Vegeta, who was entirely on the backfoot in his battle with Granolah, was able to turn the tide the instant he adopted Ultra Ego.

In this form, the user is required to relish in self-indulgence, adopting a mental state befitting of one who craves nothing but destruction. As the user takes more damage, and their battle-lust increases, their power further grows in this state, leaving there to be no clear cap on how strong one can become.

Ultra Ego's biggest advantage over Ultra Instinct is that, unlike the latter, once a user achievers this state, there is no period in which they must train to be able to adopt it at will. After unlocking it on Cereal, Vegeta was able to access the form multile times after, even when at the end of his tether.

Notably, while the form exerts god ki, Son Gokū states that the ki is unique to the form itself, distinct from normal god ki.

Drawbacks[]

While the accumulation of damage to heighten power is the basis behind part of Ultra Ego, it is also the form's greatest detriment. Accumulating a large amount of damage over time can push a wielder to their limit, causing them to pass out and lose the form - additionally, simply taking too much damage at once, such as when Black Freeza defeated Vegeta in one blow, can override the form's benefits.

Additionally, to fully use Ultra Ego, one has to lose their morality, and embrace fully the love of destruction. Vegeta noted he was unable to return to his old ways, and could not completely utilise the form because of the morality he'd gained.

Creation and Conception[]

Toyotarō himself created the idea and concept behind Ultra Ego, and it was approved by Akira Toriyama himself. The name was chosen to match Ultra Instinct, and the design was created alongside the name to match Vegeta. Vegeta's appearance in the form, meanwhile, is based off that of Hakaishin Beerus, who is a user of Ultra Ego. Additionally, Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct are described as yin and yang.[7]
