"It's an ultimate technique that severs the consciousness from the body in order to allow the body to subconsciously move it to even attack and evade. It's called 'Ultra Instinct'."

Ultra Instinct is a technique of the gods, namely a speciality of Angels.[1] Ultra Instinct is considered to be an ultimate technique that severs the link between conscious and body allowing the user to dodge any attack subconsciously.[2] It is an extraordinarily difficult technique to master, even for the Hakaishin. However, Angels, who are always in the Ultra Instinct state,[3] know it as the "state of the gods" (神の領域, kami no ryōiki).

It has been called an "Evasion Technique" (かいわざ, Kaihi Waza),[4] and an ability without a weakness.[5]

Attributes[]

Whis Training Son Gokū

Whis' permanent Ultra Instinct outclassing Gokū's technique.

The body of any living being is accompanied by limitations. For one to fight — or to even perform basic actions — they must first process their actions and think with their brain. Doing this limits their speed and will hamper their ability to fight effectively. The ultimate goal for a fighter is the Mastery of Self-Movement, the ability for each and every part of their body to act and think on its own; this allows for much greater reaction speed, as a fighter no longer needs to take the time to process their actions, and can simply do them.[6] Letting the body judge and act on its own is considered difficult, but doing so would allow the user to take on any enemy.[7]

Considered the opposite to unlocking compared to the Super Saiyan transformation through rage, Ultra Instinct will activate when the user achieves self control in the face of a jarring shock to their emotions.[8] For those who have not mastered the technique, they are still more than capable of utilising it, as seen when Beerus faced off against the Hakaishin in the Zen Exhibition Match; he avoided a good majority of their techniques without even looking, though still managed to be caught as he had not mastered it completely.[9] Mastering the technique allows Whis to effortlessly defend against Son Gokū and Vegeta simultaneously without the need to access his full power.

Son Gokū Using Ultra Instinct

There are degrees of accuracy with the ability, as Whis noted his command over Ultra Instinct is greater than Merus, while the Grand Priest's ability is more accurate than his own, leading to Gokū realising his usage puts him at the bottom of the ladder with the potential to train and grow the ability to get stronger.[10] From combining the ability with a Saiyan transformation, his Ultra Instinct becomes more accurate,[11] which Gokū has done using Super Saiyan God and Completed Super Saiyan Blue, the later combination he noted would be more difficult for an opponent to counter.[12]

Drawbacks[]

…When Gokū's body just reacts, it takes quite a toll on him. He may have obtained Ultra Instinct, but Gokū hasn't trained enough to wield it properly.

—Whis explaining Ultra Instinct's drawbacks, Dragon Ball Super chapter 41

The largest drawback of Ultra Instinct is the difficulty in which the technique is to master. For instance, Beerus spent millions of years in training and still has not mastered the technique. A significant part of this difficulty comes with the technique's massive stamina drain. For one who has not trained enough with Ultra Instinct, the forcible instinctive movements of the body in combat exact a terrible toll. As a result, novice users of Ultra Instinct cannot maintain it long.[13][14]

Trivia[]

  • While far from the same technique, Villainous Mode characters in Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 are able to dodge melee strikes completely. No. 13 was given a similar technique, called Data Input, that mirrors this effect for a brief period.
  • Following Moro copying Merus' Angel Power, his body began swelling in an attempt to contain it, prompting Gokū to inform him he only mastered Ultra Instinct after honing his body to withstand it, suggesting that the Angel Power causing the swelling was Ultra Instinct.
  • According to Granolah, when Ultra Instinct is activated, it changes the movement of the user's cells.
