Martial arts isn't like street fighting. It's not like just blindly attacking will be effective. You calculate your distance, sense your opponents' rhythm and movements, find your opportunity, and take advantage of it. Only a true martial artist could do that. It's more than just being a simple brawler.

Whis (ウイス, Uisu) is an Angel and the guide of the gods of the 7th Universe. Whis often acts as an attendant for Beerus.

Background[]

Over a thousand years ago, Whis was trained by his older sister Vados.[4] At some point, Whis apparently was tasked with overseeing and training the successive Hakaishin of the 7th Universe. As Beerus' teacher, Whis taught martial arts to him but is not as strong as beerus. Sometime later, King Vegeta treated Beerus and Whis to a feast in his palace on planet Vegeta.

Personality[]

Whis has a calm, patient and peaceful personality, but is absent-minded, and often sets his priorities on elements that are not nearly as important as the one at hand. He remains calm even when his student, Beerus, goes into fits of extreme rage, but can become irritated if Beerus goes too far. He is also shown to have a disliking for poor table manners, negatively commenting on Beerus' sloppy eating when visiting a planet.[5] He is very polite and also has a great fond for eating all varieties of food, as shown when he eats a cake while telling the Dragon Team that the entire Solar System will be destroyed in an instant in honorific register or when he is shown visiting a restaurant and trying all of the cuisines while Beerus fights the Dragon Team on Earth.

Although he treats Beerus with respect, he also keeps Beerus from going out of place with his duties, which is known to happen from time to time. He can be seen as a father-figure to Beerus. As he looks after him, cooks for him, and gets his food but also keeps him under control.

Whis does seem to show some sense of self-preservation as he seems to constantly keep an eye out for a new Hakaishin to succeed Beerus when he dies as Whis ceases to function should there not be a Hakaishin for him to serve.

Appearance[]

Whis BoG

Whis.

Whis is a humanoid being with teal skin, white hair, and rather effeminate features. He always holds a long scepter, with a black gem floating above, in his right hand along with a large light blue ring around the neck. Whis's attire consists of a maroon robe, a black cuirass with the same white and orange diamond decorations like Beerus, and a blue sash. He also wears black high-heeled shoes with white spats.

Abilities[]

Whis is considered the most powerful being in the 7th Universe, which Beerus states that Whis is his master and stronger than he is.[6] Whis also reveals during his training of Gokū and Vegeta that he has the power to go back in time three minutes before and alter events to prevent them from happening.[7] Whis also has access to unique abilities centered around the use of his staff, such as making objects vanish and reappear[6] and materializing new objects from nothing.[8] He can teleport other people to his own pocket dimension, which he claims is inescapable.[9]

Like the Frost Demons, he can also survive in the vacuum of space, which allows him to freely traverse the cosmos without the aid of a spaceship or spacesuit. Whis' ability to detect someone's killing intent is far superior to anyone else other than Beerus, as he and Beerus was able to sense Zamasu's killing intent when not even Gokū or any Kaiōshin present was able to sense it.

Ultra Instinct[]

With Ultra Instinct, his fighting style revolves around having each of his limbs act as its own organism, eliminating the need for thoughts to travel from the brain to the limbs,[10] which gives him much faster reaction time than any other known fighter in the 7th Universe. This also enables him to effortless block a barrage of attacks from both Gokū and Vegeta while dozing off.

Power and Physical Prowess[]

His power exceeds the Hakaishin Beerus, who easily defeated Super Saiyan 3 Gokū, Super Saiyan Gotenks, Ultimate Gohan, Mr. Bū, and a fully-powered Vegeta, as he manages to knock him unconscious with a simple chop to the neck.[6]

Intelligence[]

Whis is extraordinarily intelligent and well-informed. He also knows about the Dragon Balls and its origin.[6] He is also capable of speaking a variety of alien tongues.[11] He is very analytical in his observations, as he was easily able to inform Vegeta and Goku of their flaws after just one sparring. As the God of Destructions teacher, he is extremely skilled and knowledgeable in martial arts. His is very wise, as he is known to give advice to his students and others (Bulma in particular) to a great degree.

Speed[]

Whis also claims to be the fastest in the universe.[12] This is exemplified by his ability to travel around the universe in a mere matter of minutes.

God and God Arc[]

Main article: God and God Arc Somewhere in the universe, Beerus is being hosted by an hog-like race on their homeworld. When Beerus examines the food closely, Whis reprimands him. The Hakaishin seems unenthused by the food laid before him, but claims to like the salty drink provided to him — though he was displeased by how greasy it was. He decides to only destroy half of the planet, which he accomplishes with only a tap of his finger.[13]

Beerus attempts to remember about his dream while calling out to Whis to see if "it" is ready. Whis, meanwhile, arrives on a primitive world. There he encounters a primitive race who have killed a dinosaur. His arrival angers one of the locals, whom he then converses with in their native tongue. The native is further angered and transforms, however, Beerus arrives announcing that Whis' time is up. Beerus fights with the enraged native and wins easily. Deciding not to take the dinosaur meat, Beerus destroys their planet. Beerus and Whis watch the primitive world explode, the Hakaishin recalls the name of the being from his dream: Super Saiyan God. Whis and Beerus head home.[14]

Beerus and Whis return to their home. In the temple, Beerus is eating his favorite desert while trying to confirm to himself if the being from his dream truly was the Super Saiyan God. Beerus calls the Oracle Fish and asks it to confirm the name of the being from his dream. The Oracle Fish has trouble remembering. Beerus threatens the fish by taking its daily feeds away, causing the Oracle Fish to remember that the being's name is Super Saiyan God. Whis informs Beerus that the Super Saiyan God does not exist and that Planet Vegeta was destroyed along with the majority of its inhabitants except for a few who survived. Beerus decides to take a bath. In the bath, Beerus asks Whis the location of the surviving Saiyans and is informed by Whis that the surviving Saiyans are on a planet called Earth. Beerus vaguely remembers exterminating the dinosaurs that roamed Earth for being boorish. Whis informs the Hakaishin that the Saiyan Gokū defeated Freeza, which shocks Beerus. Beerus is then shown projections of Gokū's battle with Freeza on Planet Namek. Beerus exits the bath and puts on bath robes, deciding what to do. Beerus decides to track down the Saiyan who defeated Freeza, Gokū; the Hakaishin Whis to prepare their lunches for the trip. Both Beerus and Whis travel to North Kaiō's planet to find Gokū.[15]

Beerus and Whis arrive on North Kaiō's planet, which Beerus notes that its quite small but Whis reminds him that it is small due to him destroying it after becoming furious at losing a game to the North Kaiō. During the sparring between Gokū and Beerus, Whis tries to eat some lunch, although he claims that he won't have a chance to eat because Beerus will defeat Gokū momentarily. However, after Gokū transforms into Super Saiyan 3, Whis gleefully notes that he will be able to eat some lunch after all. Beerus eventually defeats Gokū without much effort. Disappointed at the lack of challenge, Beerus departs with Whis to Earth to see if Prince Vegeta and the other Saiyans know anything about the Super Saiyan God, bidding North Kaiō farewell.[16]

Beerus and Whis arrive on a cruise ship, where Bulma's birthday party is being held. Beerus meets with Vegeta, asking about the Super Saiyan God but he also shows no knowledge about it. Beerus notes that a festivity of sorts is happening. Vegeta, knowing about what Beerus is capable of from his childhood, welcomes him and his attendant to Bulma's party wanting to put him in a good mood. Whis enjoys the delicious food.[17]

During the party, Beerus and Majin Bu start an argument over pudding which soon turns into a fight between the Dragon Team and Beerus. While the Dragon Team attempts to fight Beerus, Whis continues to enjoy the food.[18]

After Gokū summons Shenron and learns about the true nature of the Super Saiyan God legend, the other Saiyans attempt to transform Gokū but fail. Whis points out that they are missing one Saiyan. Growing tired of waiting, Beerus starts preparing his attack to destroy the planet. Suddenly, Videl jumps in front of the Saiyans. She says that there is one more Saiyan who might be able to help them – her and Gohan's unborn child. The Saiyans and Videl attempt the transformation again and manage to transform Gokū into the Super Saiyan God.

While Gokū and Beerus battle, Whis continues to enjoy eating the delicious food from the party. Whis encounters the Pilaf Gang and offers them food, to which they gratefully accept.[19]

Whis sees that Vegeta is watching the battle between Beerus and Goku above and offers to let him watch the battle through his scepter, but the Saiyan Prince ignores Whis. Suddenly, Bulma's Capsule Corporation ship plummets down to the cruise ship. However, Whis stops the ship from crashing down using telekinesis and lands it safely.[20]

As Goku and Beerus struggle to push the ultra high density ki sphere at each other, Whis notes that Earth along with many planets nearby will be destroyed due to the struggle. Mr. Satan asks Whis to stop the fighting by bribing him with an "all you can eat throughout the country" ticket. Although the offer is tempting, Whis refuses it. Back in space, the struggle between Gokū and Beerus continues; the ultra high density ki sphere soon explodes and envelopes Earth in a bright light. However, Earth is not destroyed. Whis is surprised that Beerus decided to take that course of action.

Goku's Super Saiyan God transformation ends with the Dragon Team being able to sense Goku's ki again and realize what it means; Whis informs them that their assumptions are correct and that Gokū's Super Saiyan God transformation has ended and has returned to a Super Saiyan. Whis sees Beerus' happiness is and notes that the last time he has seen Beerus so happy was about 900 years ago. Whis prepares to leave with his food souvenir but Piccolo grabs hold of him. Suddenly, Vegeta fires a ki blast at Piccolo, causing Piccolo to let go of Whis.[21]

After Beerus wins the battle against Gokū, Whis commends the former and requests that he return home and recuperate, in an attempt to sway the Hakaishin from destroying the Earth. Beerus intends to keep good on his promise and aims to destroy the planet as a result of winning his fight against Gokū by charging up a ki blast, but misses the Earth entirely due to suddenly falling asleep. Whis informs a flabbergasted Dragon Team that the Hakaishin is tired, and explains that while Beerus won't wake up in a good mood, he'll likely forget about the destruction of Earth. Whis also informs the Dragon Team to make sure they have pudding the next time he and Beerus arrive, to which Bulma assures, but demands that the Earth will not be destroyed if Beerus does not like the pudding. Whis responds that Beerus will be quite angry if he does not like it regardless, which annoys Bulma. Before Whis departs with Beerus, the former says he'll reward Gokū for giving Beerus a good time.

On the way home, Whis tells Beerus wake up from his "sleep", but Beerus reassures his attendant that he actually was sleeping. Whis and Beerus discuss that Earth has the ability to change people, and Whis speculates that Beerus saying he'd show Gokū his 100% of his power was a lie in order to draw out the Saiyan's full power, which Beerus confirms.[22]

Revival of "F" Arc[]

Main article: Revival of "F" Arc Whis returns to Earth to hang out with Bulma. At a restaurant, Bulma treats Whis to delicious food. Whis enjoys the delicious food and apologizes to Bulma for the trouble, to which Bulma replies that its fine since they are friends. At Capsule Corporation, Vegeta returns as well as Bulma and Whis. Vegeta is shocked to see Whis who responds that he comes to Earth sometimes to hang out with Bulma and eat delicious food. Vegeta demands that Whis take him to Beerus so that he can challenge him. However, Bulma pulls Vegeta away to explain to him that if he challenges Beerus the Hakaishin will come to Earth and try to destroy it again. Bulma and Whis prepare to leave in order to have desert. Vegeta tries to get Whis to take him by force, but Whis uses his ki to immobilize the Saiyan. Vegeta asks what Whis is, to which Whis explains that he is Beerus’ teacher, which shocks Bulma and Vegeta. Whis tells Vegeta that his training has made him stronger since Beerus came to Earth and advises Vegeta that he must control his ki more properly in order to become stronger which would allow him to even surpass Goku. Seeing that Whis can help him surpass his limitations, Vegeta stops Whis in his tracks, bows before him and asks Whis to train him. However, Whis replies that he will accept Vegeta as a student only if he becomes a Hakaishin. Before Bulma and Whis leave, Vegeta proposes that he will treat Whis to the most delicious food Earth has to offer in exchange for becoming his student; Vegeta takes Whis to many restaurants but Vegeta’s efforts are in vain as Bulma has taken Whis to the restaurants before. Desperate to get Whis to train him, Vegeta decides to cook for Whis only to fail. As one last ditch effort, Vegeta gives Whis the food that Bulma has hidden from him; a cup of noodles. Whis tastes the noodles and finds it to be magnificent; Whis decides to take Vegeta to Beerus’ Planet. Before leaving, Bulma gives Vegeta new and improved battle armor for him to wear while training. After a few moments, Vegeta and Whis arrive on Beerus' Planet.[23]

Six months after taking Vegeta to Beerus' Planet, Whis returns to Earth again after being offered a meal by Bulma. At Capsule Corporation, Gokū asks Whis to train him, to which Whis grants Gokū's request. Before leaving, Whis decides to have his meal. However, Gokū's impatience starts to annoy Whis and Bulma warns Gokū that Whis might change his mind if he keeps annoying Whis; Gokū relents and decides to wait patiently. Whis finishes his meal and is delighted by its delicacy. After Chi-Chi arrives and starts arguing with Gokū, Whis sees that their argument will take some time and decides to leave, causing Gokū to apologize to Chi-Chi and grabs onto Whis. Whis and Gokū begin traveling to Beerus' Planet. While traveling to Beerus' Planet, Whis asks Gokū if it was okay to leave like that, to which Gokū tells Whis that he is sure Chi-Chi understands well.[24]

Gokū and Whis arrive at Beerus' Planet. Vegeta welcomes Whis home while Whis tells Vegeta that he has brought Gokū along with him because he wants to receive training as well, although the Saiyan Prince isn't surprised since he knew Gokū would come sooner or later. Whis decides to let Vegeta handle the rest and leaves to attend to his sweets that he received from Bulma.

After Gokū and Vegeta finish their chores, Whis appears and decides to begin the training. Before the training begins, Whis presents Gokū with a new dogi to wear while training. Gokū changes into his new clothes and thanks Whis. The training begins; Whis explains that Gokū and Vegeta must put their hands into weights and lift it up. Then, they must run a lap around Beerus' Planet while carrying the weights. Gokū tries lifting his weights but finds it to be difficult. Vegeta demonstrates for Gokū but finds difficulty as well, to which Whis explains that he doubled Vegeta's weights. Eventually, Gokū and Vegeta manage to lift their weights and begin their lap. However, Whis tells them to start running because if they don't the path behind them will disappear and if they fall off they will be thrown into another dimension, never able to return. As Gokū and Vegeta outrun the disappearing path, Whis is surprised to see Gokū and Vegeta handle the training well. Suddenly, the Oracle Fish appears who tells Whis that it is time; Whis teleports Gokū and Vegeta to Beerus' bedroom which is what Vegeta warned Gokū about. The sleeping Hakaishin attacks the Saiyan duo in a grumpy rage and blasts them with an Atomic Sphere from his mouth, then falls back into his deep slumber. Gokū and Vegeta survive Beerus' Atomic Sphere, which pleases Whis and decides to end their training for today.

Later that night while playing a game, the Oracle Fish asks Whis if his training is a bit too harsh. Whis explains that Gokū and Vegeta's strength is the height of a tree while the strength of a god is the height of the castle, saying that they raise the level of their ki without becoming Super Saiyans otherwise they won't become stronger. Whis wonders if the Oracle Fish is concerned for the Saiayn duo, but the Oracle Fish replies that if they die then the great amount of snacks he will get will stop. As Gokū is sleeping, Vegeta is continuing his training by lifting the heavy weights from earlier, not wanting to lose to Gokū.

The next day, Whis explains that Gokū and Vegeta's training will be a sparing session with him, which surprises Vegeta who has never spared with Whis before. Gokū and Vegeta attack Whis who easily dodges their every attack. Whis stops Gokū and Vegeta, explaining that they are not fast enough because they think too much which puts a limit on their speed. Whis explains that to increase their speed, each part of their body must think independently which is a difficult technique to master, saying that even Beerus has not perfected this technique. However, Whis says that mastering this technique will enable them to avoid any dangerous situation that may arise.[25]

Gokū and Vegeta continue sparing with Whis. After a while, Whis stops them. Whis notes that Gokū and Vegeta are better than compared to earlier on but they are still not fast enough as he managed to sign their clothes, which surprises the Saiyan duo. Whis tells Vegeta that he is a genius at fighting but Gokū is still one step ahead of him and the reason for that is because he is constantly tensed and thinks too much which limits his full potential; Whis advises Vegeta to relax in order to stay calm, like Gokū. However, Whis notes that Gokū being too relaxed is also a problem and demonstrates that by hitting Gokū without him realizing it while noting that his overconfidence is also a problem. Whis advises Gokū that his confidence and being too relaxed will make him carefree and thus will cause him to be caught off guard most of the time. Whis tells the Saiyan duo that they will increase the pace of the training now.[26]

Whis oversees Gokū and Vegeta's training; Whis notes that the two Saiyans have grown stronger in such a short space of time. Soon, Beerus arrives after having trouble falling fast asleep. Beerus wonders how the Saiyans are on his planet, to which Goku tells the Hakaishin that Whis brought them here. Beerus speculates that his attendant only agreed to do so with the reward of food, which Gokū and Vegeta confirm. Beerus becomes wary of Gokū and surmises that the Saiyans is building his strength in order to take his job as Hakaishin, which Gokū and Vegeta deny, the latter not wanting the former to surpass him. Beerus asks his attendant for the delicious food, but Whis regretfully informs the Hakaishin that he accidentally dropped the food this time while traveling back to the planet. Suddenly, Beerus deduces from Whis' words that his attendant has repeatedly gone to Earth many times while he was asleep. Whis is silent at first but decides to be truthful, telling Beerus that he went to Earth to be his food taster.[27]

Four months after Freeza's revival, Goku and Vegeta are sparring with each other until Whis orders them to take a break. Watching the duo while relaxing from his chair, Beerus notes that the Saiyan duo is much more powerful, although Goku admits that his power is still greater than theirs. Suddenly, Beerus has an idea and order Whis to send the Saiyan duo to that place. However, Whis doubts that Goku and Vegeta are ready for it, but Beerus reasons that it is the best way to get stronger fast and as an added bonus, it won't be noisy on his planet anymore. Whis carries out the order and uses his scepter to teleport Goku and Vegeta to that place. Seeing that its quiet again, Beerus asks Whis if the snacks are ready, to which Whis notes that he will prepare them.[28]

Beerus is enjoying eating his pizza. Whis asks Beerus again if sending the Saiyan duo to that place was the best choice, to which the Hakaishin has no problem with as it is the best way to get stronger fast so that they can play with him. Whis is watching Gokū and Vegeta train; Beerus has finished eating the last box of pizza and orders Whis to provide him with more pizza. However, Whis informs Beerus that he has stored many pizza boxes in his staff but since he ordered Gokū and Vegeta to be sent there, them staff is currently in use. Beerus demands more pizza, forcing Whis to stop Gokū and Vegeta's training, transporting the Saiyan duo along with his staff back to Beerus' Planet. Whis heals Gokū and Vegeta. Afterwards, Whis gives Beerus his pizza, but the boxes are all empty, courtesy of the Saiyan duo. Beerus is furious that the Saiyan duo ate his pizza and chases after Gokū and Vegeta.

Meanwhile, Whis looks at an incoming message which is from Bulma regarding the ice cream sundae. Whis contacts Bulma; Bulma asks Whis to tell Gokū and Vegeta to return to Earth immediately and informs him about Freeza's revival. Whis informs Gokū and Vegeta about the situation; Gokū decides to have Whis transport him and Vegeta to Earth, but Whis says that it will take 35 minutes to reach Earth. Beerus reminds Gokū that he can use Instantaneous Movement; Gokū tries it, but is unable to lock onto any ki on Earth due to it being so far away. Suddenly, Gokū locks on to Gohan's ki signature; Vegeta grabs Gokū's shoulder and they teleport from Beerus' Planet to Earth.

During the ki struggle between the transformed Gokū and Freeza, Whis contacts Bulma about the ice cream sundae and informs her that they will be at Earth within less than four minutes. Suddenly, Whis stops traveling to Earth after sensing something and tells Beerus that they have unexpected visitors. The visitors appear in front of Beerus and Whis, revealing themselves to be Champa and Vados. Beerus asks Champa why he is in the 7th Universe since the Hakaishin of the Sixth Universe has no business in his universe; Champa replies that he is merely visiting and expresses surprise that Beerus is awake. Not believing Champa, Beerus asks the Sixth Universe Hakaishin if he is trying to steal food from the 7th Universe, but Champa claims that the Sixth Universe's food is superior to the 7th Universe, expressing no interest in the 7th Universe's food and states that he is merely checking things out. However, Beerus knows Champa is lying and becomes suspicious. Whis informs Beerus that they have a place to be at while Vados informs Champa that they must go. Beerus and Champa decide to settle things next time.

Beerus and Whis arrive on Earth and the Hakaishin asks Bulma for the ice cream sundae, to which Bulma gives to them. While Gokū and Freeza battle, Beerus and Whis enjoy eating their ice cream sundae. Freeza that Beerus is among the Dragon Team and asks why he is here; the Hakaishin replies that he is here to eat the ice cream sundae and is not concerned with Freeza's revenge, telling the tyrant to do whatever he likes. Watching the battle, Beerus notes that if Vegeta worked together with Gokū, Freeza would have already been defeated; Whis interjects and says that the Saiyans' pride would never allow them to work together. After Gokū is pierced by Sorbet's ray gun, Freeza prepares to kill the Saiyan but Vegeta intervenes and prepares to fight the tyrant himself. Vegeta transforms into the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and overpowers Freeza.

Refusing to accept defeat, Freeza decides to destroy the planet, killing Vegeta in the process. Shortly afterwards, Earth is destroyed, but Whis creates a bubble around a small piece of rock to protect himself and the others. While Bulma despairs, Gokū regrets not killing Freeza when he had the chance. Whis tells him that he has the power to set back time but only three minutes earlier. He does so, and they arrive back right before Freeza destroys the Earth. Gokū transforms into the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form and immediately attacks Freeza with a Kamehameha which destroys and kills the tyrant.

Beerus is disturbed at the prospect of condoning the restoration of a planet, but Bulma reassures that he and Whis will be rewarded with a large banquet. After Piccolo is revived, the Dragon Team along with Beerus and Whis attend a large banquet at Capsule Corporation. Beerus and Whis enjoy the delicious food the banquet has to offer.

Trivia[]

  • Whis' name in Japanese, Uisu (ウイス), seems to be a pun on "virus" (ウイルス; Latin pronunciation) like that of Beerus, but in fact, while Beerus was named by the film's scriptwriter Yūsuke Watanabe, Whis was named by the series' original author Akira Toriyama,[30] who mistakenly thought Beerus' name came from "beer" and gave his attendant the name Whis which he took from "whisky" (ウイスキー, uisukī).[31]
  • In terms of sheer power, by word of Akira Toriyama, Super Saiyan God Son Gokū is a 6, Beerus is a 10, and Whis would rank a 15.[32]

Quotes[]

  • (To Gokū before departing) "When Beerus-sama passes on, would you like to become the next Hakaishin?"[6]
