The Z Sword (ゼットソード, Zetto Sōdo; Viz "Zeta Sword") is a legendary blade, which has been kept in the Kaiōshin Realm since ancient times.

The sword was either created or obtained by Hakaishin Beerus, who, in a disagreement with the Kaiōshin during a meeting with the Kaiōshin, which occurs every 1,000 years, sealed the Elder Kaiōshin away within the Z Sword, as destroying the Kaiōshin Realm would have been improper.[4]

Ever since, the Z Sword was embedded in a rock in the Kaiōshin Realm, and remained such since ancient times. Numerous Kaiōshin attempted to remove the sword, however, none were successful. Legends eventually cropped up surrounding the blade, painting it as a legendary sword that would grant the one who removed it immense powers.[1]

Son Gohan wields the Z Sword.

In terms of appearance, the Z Sword appeared similarly to a longsword, otherwise known as a bastard sword. Fitting with this appearance, the sword possessed a brown, cruciform hilt consisting of a golden guard, with a blue jewel attached to the end. The blade was double-edged and very wide, meaning that the sword was designed for cutting rather than thrusting.

The Z Sword was stated to have the ability to grant whoever pulled the blade from its resting place an incredible power, believed to make them strong enough to defeat Majin Boo by Kibito. It was reputed to be the "strongest of swords". Additionally, the sword was remarkably heavy, to the point that Son Gohan, even as a Super Saiyan, had trouble pulling it out, and Gokū, despite wielding it with far more ease than his son, found the blade to be heavy as well.

In actuality, beyond giving the user a slight power increase from the training that goes into learning to wield the sword, it has no true abilities of its own. The true increase in abilities would come from destroying the blade, which would set free the Elder Kaiōshin.

  • The tale of the Z Sword mirrors that of the Arthurian legend of The Sword in the Stone.
  • The Viz name of the "Zeta Sword" comes from the Greek pronunciation of the letter Z, "Zeta".
  • The Z Sword's legend is somewhat similar to Karin's Sacred Water in which the water is stated to increase one's power, but in reality, the training in obtaining the water or in the Z Sword's case, learning to handle its weight with little effort results in a drastic increase of the person's power.
